Two years ago, I received my first hybrid camera as a gift: the Panasonic G7 Lumix! I used to take pictures with a compact waterproof Sony camera and then with a second hand Sony Nex 5 hybrid! It is by reading many technical tests and reviews that my choice was made on the Panasonic brand and more particularly on the Lumix G7! This purchase was the journey of a long reflection on what is the best hybrid camera to fit my needs! If you’re looking for a quality hybrid camera at under $750 with a multi-purpose lens, the Panasonic G7 Lumix is for you! If you’re not an expert, investing in a $2,000 camera won’t make you take better pictures! Nevertheless, a quality camera that you like with a pleasant grip is essential! So here is my review and test after two years of using the Panasonic G7 Lumix!
I’m not being paid by Panasonic to write this article! I am simply a convinced user and seduced by the brand’s choices! And this while I spent many years on Sony cameras! What I appreciate about Panasonic is that the brand’s engineers listen to their customers’ feedback and do a lot of work to offer great innovations at affordable prices.

Handling the Panasonic G7 Lumix
First of all, about the Panasonic G7 body, I immediately found its handling very pleasant! Its ergonomics facilitate the stability, essential to take photographs without moving too much when one presses on the trigger ! Equipped with a viewfinder, it is easy to change between viewfinder and screen!
Settings and buttons
As for the menus, they are functional and easy to access! For the most common settings, there is almost always a double access: by a wheel or the tactile screen, and that is a real bonus! I read that the Lumix menu was complicated which almost stopped me in my purchase. In the end, it is not so! Everyone can use the menu in their own style! Depending on the periods and my needs, I oscillate between the tactile menu or the wheel. It is also possible to configure quick access via the “fn” feature buttons! So far, I’ve never needed it! Anyway, it changed me from Sony where everything was tactile! The paths to reach an setting were sometimes so long or not very intuitive that it was too late to take my picture! In addition, in general, you had to choose between a model with touch screen or a model with buttons to access the menus…! Anyway, Sony and I, it stopped fast! Today, I can only see through Panasonic Lumix!
Tactile and orientable screen
The Panasonic G7 Lumix is equipped with a orientable screen, it was a sine qua none condition of my purchase! I got a little tired of having a screen that could only be rotated vertically! And contrary to what you might think, it’s not easy to find a hybrid camera with a swivel screen! Here, it is possible to “detach” it from the base, to incline it, to turn it over… in short, the field of possibilities is large!
I loved handling the Lumix G7and that’s why I’m so glad I decided to buy the Panasonic G7!
And another criticism with which, I disagree, the Panasonic’s body style! I love them! Between old and modern cameras! Of course, the look is not enough to crack and spend 750$ in a camera! So here’s why you should buy the Panasonic G7 Lumix and not another!
Panasonic G7 Lumix : the best hybrid camera for beginners!
4K photos for perfect motion capture
Taking 4K pictures, what is it? This consists of filming in 4K resolution and extracting still images. No more failed moving pictures! There is even one of the 4K modes which consists in recording the sequence a few seconds before the trigger. As the camera captures 25 images per second, I was able to take pictures of our cat in action! It’s ideal for animal, baby and sports photos!
Post Focus : Select focus point after shooting
Once bought, my Panasonic G7 Lumix didn’t become obsolete! Of course, it doesn’t have some technologies like 4K video in 60 frames per second! However, thanks to the updates, the Lumix G7 from Panasonic is equipped with a feature that I’ve wanted for a long time! This is the Post Focus! What is Post Focus by Panasonic? The possibility to choose after taking the photo where you want your focus point! And that’s just AWESOME! All you have to do is focus shooting and you can take your picture! With the post focus, I felt like I had a brand new camera!
With the Lumix G7 Panasonic, I could take more time to learn how to photograph! I enjoyed using my camera and its settings. I completely appropriated the Lumix G7 and it’s the first time! It is this appropriation that helped me to take beautiful photographs! The ideal way for a first purchase is the Panasonic hybrid camera and 14-140mm lens pack!
It doesn’t look like it, but I only triggered it once. It’s the same picture.
Lumix G7 Panasonic : the best hybrid camera for travelling
I also want to share why I chose to buy the Lumix G7 Panasonic! For several years already, we (Benoît and I) were going regularly on trips abroad or in France and were looking for a quality camera ! But not just that! I wanted a light camera! Our holidays are often sporting, we don’t drive and I’m small! So I didn’t want to go on a trip with a reflex camera that was too heavy! I used to have compact cameras because I liked to be able to slip them in my pockets! But after several years, I wanted more than a compact camera! So buying a hybrid camera was a necessary change!
If you love photography, especially when travelling, and are looking for a quality hybrid camera at less than 1000$, you have found the camera you need with the Lumix G7!
With its 400 grams body (without lens), the Panasonic G7 Lumix met my first requirement: the weight! And I can tell you that with the 20 kilometres a day walking in cities like Vancouver, I was happy not to feel its weight! Same, when I climbed the 1000m elevation gain at Grouse Mountain, with a backpack filled with a tripod, a bottle of water, clothes against the cold and rain, the weight of the camera was essential! I even wore it on my shoulder while we were biking in the Canadian Rockies! With its light weight, I have never been limited or burdened in my sports days on vacation!
I will say that if you are small or you like walking, hiking, the Lumix G7 is for you!
And around your neck, it doesn’t weigh too much to endure a full day! It’s important because to take pictures, you don’t have to be lazy to take it out because it’s too heavy or store at the bottom of the backpack! It is therefore essential to feel comfortable with it! In my eyes, I found the ideal hybrid camera to go on a trip!

I first photographed with the Panasonic G7 Lumix : my travels! I tested it first of all on ski vacation, the opportunity to familiarize myself with the camera before a month trip to Canada! Then I took over 10,000 photos in Canada, between Vancouver, Calgary, Banff National Park and Montreal! A real moment of complicity between my camera and me!
Today, its out of its briefcase every day! Next to the holidays, I take pictures of our baby with the Lumix! It’s a good way to take it better in hand and especially to create much more beautiful memories of our little one than with a smartphone! Because it’s over, forget the pictures with iPhone or other phone! Nothing beats a hybrid camera to take pictures!
So I take as many pictures of landscapes, cities on a trip as I do of my family in our daily lives! And for that, I found the best camera that does it all!
Panasonic G7 Lumix : review
It’s not me who says it but many photo experts: the Lumix G7 Panasonic is one of the best hybrid cameras! Overall, Panasonic always ranks very high with its digital cameras! Today, the GH4 and Lumix GH5 have become essential for making video! Nevertheless, the price of Panasonic GH5 can cool more than one! If you are rather photo, it is the G7 as well as the Lumix GX9 which could interest you! Not to mention the all-new Lumix G9 from Panasonic! It costs however the double : 1689$!
The main advantage of the Lumix G7 from Panasonic, beyond its quality, is its price! Quality hybrid camera at less than 750$ with lens! To me, it’s one of the best value cameras on the market! At this price, you get 4K 25 fps video, Post Focus and 4K Photos!

Because pictures tell more than words !
Which lens is best to buy with the Lumix G7?
The best lens for the Lumix G7 Panasonic is the 14-140 mm sold in the pack! All-purpose, it allows you to do everything and have one of the best hybrid cameras with a great price! It is a super versatile lens that allows you to take photos of city trips as landscapes or portraits! (Full frame equivalent 28-280mm) !
With the 14-140 mm lens, this makes it possible to have two lenses in one! So for 750$, a super quality camera + a lens worth two ! When I tell you that the Panasonic G7 + 14-140 mm is the best value for money!
Which lenses are compatible with the Panasonic G7 Lumix ?
Once you have purchased the Panasonic Lumix G7 camera body, the great thing about this type of camera is that you can attach different types of lenses. Although the 14-140mm Lumix lens is versatile, you may expect more after some practice. I suggest you here a selection of lenses compatible with the Lumix G7 Panasonic!
The majority of advised lenses are fixed focal lenses, i.e. it is impossible to zoom! For my part, I started by buying a Lumix G 25 mm f1.7 and I was completely stunned! That’s what decided me to invest in premium optics like the Lumix GX Vario 12-35mm f2.8 lens!
With the Lumix Vario Lens 14-140mm f3.5-5.6 you cover almost the entire spectrum of the most important requirements. Also, unless you have better quality, lenses that cover the same field with the same characteristics have no interest. So I selected only the interesting lenses to have that are compatible with the Panasonic Lumix G7 in addition to the 14-140 mm.
Lumix G7 Compatible Lenses for Portrait
Lumix G 25 mm f1.7
If you only had to buy one lens to start, it’s the one I recommend! With a great value for money, it allows beautiful bokeh while having a focal length that allows to see like with the human eye. Very affordable, this lens is hot. Very light, I always take it with me to take pictures of my son in the park! It allows me to make very beautiful portraits. It is also ideal in low light, especially indoors or at night.

If you want to go further than with the 14-140mm in a reasonable budget, it is this one that you should buy!

Lumix G Vario 7-14 mm f4.0
If you purchased the Lumix G7 with 14-140mm lens, you may be missing a wide angle lens. You haven’t had enough distance on a trip? Think about buying a wide angle! We would have loved to have it in the Canadian Rockies to photograph the immensity of Lake Louise. The Lumix 7-14mm is an ideal wide-angle lens to complement the 14-140mm.
Leica 8-18 mm f2.8-4.0
Looking for a wide-angle lens with a professional quality, look at the Leica 8-18mm. The advantage of this Leica 8-18mm wide angle is its brighter opening than the Lumix. You will have a professional quality wide angle lens.
Versatile lenses compatible with Panasonic G7 Lumix
Lumix GX Vario 12-35 mm f2.8 II
It is the equivalent of a 24-70 mm, a classic but here with constant aperture. This means that when you zoom in, you stay at 2.8 for optimal brightness. It is by discovering this objective that I understood the importance of the lenses more than the camera ! I bring it to all my trip ! The only drawback is that 35mm is too short, so it’s better to also have the 35-100 mm f2.8. That’s a big budget! But we have here a versatile, quality and light lens.

Leica 12-60mm f2.8-4.0
The Leica 12-60 f2.8-4.0 lens is Leica’s versatile professional lens for Panasonic. The opening is not constant as on the 12-35mm but the covered range is more interesting. The full-format equivalent is 24-120mm, making it an ideal professional quality lens for traveling! Landscape, portrait, wide angle, you can do almost anything! In the same price as the 12-35mm, you will have a very high quality, lightweight and versatile lens.
Leica 50-200 mm f2.8-4.0
Another very versatile zoom is the Leica 50-200mm. Full size equivalent of a 100-400mm, its price may seem high, it is not so when you know the prices for a reflex !
